Boise police officer Christopher M. Rogers fatally shot James "Juston" Atkinson, 21, on Aug. 31 1997 after being dragged by Atkinson's car for three blocks. Rogers and another officer had heard Atkinson peel out of a parking lot near 6th and Main streets. When Atkinson wouldn't stop, Rogers jumped on the car, held on to it while it swerved and finally shot Atkinson in the head. The case is under review by the Boise Police Department and the Idaho Department of Law Enforcement. Officers Bryan Hagler and Jerry Lister were injured and Ramon Aseguinolaza, 26, was killed during a shootout April 11 in a Fairview pool hall parking lot. The officers were investigating "suspicious movements" after stopping Aseguinolaza's car. He fired twice, hitting each officer. They fired back, striking him in the head, neck, chest, shoulder and buttocks. The Idaho Attorney General's office is now reviewing the case. Officer John Terry fatally shot Scott James Moody, 28, on Nov. 22, 1996, after police said Moody pulled a gun while being questioned for acting suspiciously. Moody fired at Terry. The bullet grazed the officer's right hip. The state cleared Terry of any wrongdoing. Boise Police detective Dave Smith shot and killed 20-year-old Ryan Hennessey after a car chase on Nov. 6, 1996. Smith later was cleared of any wrongdoing. The family of Hennessey has filed a $20 million claim against the city alleging Smith acted outside what is expected of a prudent officer. Boise Police bike patrol officers Scott Mulcahy and Clay Christensen shot Mario Louis Jaramillo to death June 14, 1996, during a foot chase downtown. Jaramillo was a 20-year-old escaped prisoner from Nevada. The officers had been chasing him after receiving a tip that he tried to sell marijuana at a Denny's restaurant, the officers ere cleared of any wrongdoing. Boise Police officers John Sproul and Dennis Scifres shot and wounded armed robbery suspect Lorne Edward Stevenson on Jan. 24, 1996. It was the first use of potentially deadly force by Boise Police since 1992. The officers later were cleared of wrongdoing. |
